A couple of plugs this week: Patrick Berry has a new Rows Garden up at his site, A-Frame Games. As usual, stellar stuff from the master. And I want to also plug Nathan Curtis’ Tortoise Shell Puzzles; Nathan’s been creating variety puzzles such as Marching Bands and Snake Charmers and cryptics for the better part of a year now. He even did a Rows Garden a while back, and it’s quality stuff. Be sure to check out Nathan’s site HERE.

7/11/12 1:50 PM, 3:50 CDT UPDATES: Small error in the clue for Row A. “Englishman” has been substituted with “British man”. Thanks to Dan B. and Joon P. for bringing this to the attention of the staff.

It’s that time of year…the college hockey season is officially upon us. If there’s one thing I’m as passionate in than crosswords, it’s college puck. I have season tickets to my hometown St. Cloud State Huskies, who opened their home schedule with a win and a tie against New Hampshire, a team that’s winless so far this year but surely is better than their record would indicate. We’re pretty fortunate here in St. Cloud (pop. 60,000) to call home to a Division I hockey team, especially one in what I would consider the premier conference in the country, the WCHA. Many on the East Coast would disagree and point to Hockey East, but, no. Two totally different styles of play, however; the east features smaller, faster players and play higher-scoring affairs, whereas the western conferences play more of a physical, bruising style of play with bigger players. To use a musical analogy, it’s East Coast jazz compared to Midwest hard rock.

It is a niche sport, but I know I’m not the only crossword blogger to have a passion for college hockey. But enough with my rambling, enjoy the puzzle!

Eventful week here at Aries Puzzles land…was pleased to talk puzzles over coffee with America’s favorite crossword blogger, Rex Parker, on Wednesday during his Minnesota vacation. Lot of interesting discussion regarding the politically-correctness of crosswords, the evolution of solving in the digital age, and much more. Interestingly, he told me his Wall Street Journal acceptance story, which boiled down to finding out that his puzzle was accepted the day before it ran in the paper. Funny thing is, that’s exactly what happened to me, as my “Proper Channels” puzzle was published in the WSJ last Friday. Go solve it here if you haven’t already.

Enjoy this week’s Rows Garden!
