Short post, as I’m suffering from a post-Christmas food hangover. One more hurrah (New Year’s) and then it’s serious diet-and-exercise time around here. Traditionally I add a little winter weight, but I’ve done that and then some what with my Texas barbecue-and-Tex Mex free-for-all and then the constant noshing that has become the holidays. Never been one for New Year’s resolutions, but losing weight seems like one that nobody’s ever done before (facetiousness alert). At least this time I think I’m frustrated enough to give it an honest try. Any suggestions? Friends keep mentioning P90X, so I may give that a try. Good ol’ gym membership might be the most sensible tack to take.

Enjoy this one, especially the topical A-Row entry. Made a mental note of it a few weeks ago, what with its good fortune of having nine letters, and put it on ice specifically for the last puzzle of the year. 2011′s been a blast, and here’s to 2012 being that much better.

That’s yours truly posing in front of an apropos sign I saw whilst traveling in Victoria, Texas. The garden itself was closed when we got there, but the picture was definitely worth it. And so was the trip! But man, that drive will wear a guy out. Twenty hours and 1300 miles one way sounds long on paper but it’s even longer actually going through with it. But the weather was nice (when the rain was holding off), the barbecue was delicious, and the company was splendid. Really impressed by San Antonio, in particular the River Walk, and we also got to the Gulf one day, and then we hit the LBJ Presidential Museum and Library on the UT-Austin campus. And what trip down south wouldn’t be complete without a memorable trip to the Waffle House? Nothing like sexual tension between the waitstaff to make greasy spoon food go down easier. If you’re ever in the Alvaredo, Texas area, check out their Waffle House, if only for a cup of coffee — you’re in for some down-home entertainment!

Now I return for the holiday whirlwind and I’ve got to play some serious catch-up with my Christmas shopping. I hope I don’t forget anyone this year, but if I did, I’ve got those forty hours worth of highway time to blame. That was sure fun, but I think we’re flying next time…

Not much of a post today, as I’m busy having a blast here in Victoria, TX. I’ll have a full report next week, with a few pictures. Pretty funny, though — in this city, there’s a mall called the “Andrew J. Center” and right by the zoo, there’s a public Rose Garden! Talk about funny coincidences.

Enjoy this week, and feel free to post your times over at Dan Feyer‘s blog. He’s just started to post a Google doc that lets other users post their times. Pretty cool, as you can see how you stack up with some of the fastest solvers in the world solving all the relevant dailies. It’s also convenient for me, as it eliminates the necessity to carry around a notepad to record my times.

Also, if you missed it, I had a guest puzzle over at Brendan Emmett Quigley‘s blog on Friday, along with a fun interview. Check it out!
